Dog of the Month
Everyone loves Manny! All the volunteers, staff and visitors to The Ranch. He’s a perfect size at about 30 pounds and happy and cheerful. He gets along well with other dogs. He sure loves to have someone stop by his run. It gets even better if that someone happens to have a leash and he knows he’s going to go out for an adventure. He’s two-years old, so still playful but over the worst of the puppy years.
May Success
May Was a Great Month
In the month of May, we sent 37 dogs north of the border for a forever home and we had 5 local adoptions.
Volunteer of the Month
This month we’re featuring our volunteer Henry Byrum. He is a regular on Saturdays when he comes to walk dogs. Every dog he walks get some private Henry time.
Drone for Sale
This Drone was donated to The Ranch. All proceeds from the sale will go to help feed and shelter our beloved dogs. It is a Hubson X4 drone with 720P camera, 6 extra batteries, and a charging unit.
Saved by the Bell
Several months ago, I was eating Sunday breakfast and I received a call about a dog who was being abused on a construction sight near my home. I dropped my toast and jumped in my car and took off to investigate.
Sponsors Needed
Fundraising has been a bit challenging this year. We all look forward to getting back together in large groups and celebrating the work The Ranch does with a fun activity. However, while we are waiting for that to happen, we established our sponsorship program. This lets a person choose a Ranch dog to sponsor for a donation of $30 usd, $36 Canadian, or $600 mxn per month
Puppies Teach Kids
A couple of months ago, I received a call from a person in San Juan Cosala whose female dog had given birth to ten pups and the family couldn’t keep them. They were only three weeks old, and couldn’t be separated from their mom just yet. I volunteered to go out and vaccinate the mama, worm the pups and if they could care for them until they were weaned, we would take them.
Finding Chemo
A couple of years ago, we took in this beautiful Pitbull mix. She was happy and did very well with other dogs. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a sexually transmitted cancer called TVT- Transmissible Veneral Tumor. This is very treatable with chemo that is also used on humans. The only problem is that she needed to be isolated until her treatments were finished.
Flight Escorts Needed
Finally, things are starting to feel like they’re back to normal. Many of us are fully vaccinated as are our families and friends in the US - and we’re ready to visit. When I’ve flown recently, the flights were completely or nearly full. We want to travel!
Dog of the Month
Meet our beautiful Cuba!
She is approximately two-years old and such a sweet soul. She was rescued by a very kind-hearted local rescuer who just ended up with more dogs than she could handle.
Volunteer of the Month
Welcome to one of our newer volunteers, Kim Hayes!
Kim moved to Lakeside just a few months ago. She’s a retired Navy veteran who then worked for the VA. Fortunately for us, Kim and her partner chose to retire Lakeside and she is a true dog lover. I met her when she had pulled a dog out of the busy carretera near Walmart - that was our Abby who recently flew to Friday Harbor.
Come Fly With Me
We had a visitor this month that made us all really happy! Wylene is a flight attendant with Alaska Airlines living in Seattle, Washington. She readily admits that she loves traveling and dogs, so helping us get our beautiful dogs to their new homes is a win/win in her book.
Items for Sale
The Ranch has received an amazing donation; a brand new Cricut machine.
Ranch Hand Magic
One of our biggest challenges at The Ranch is coping with dogs who are so frightened by people that they don’t want anything to do with us. Dogs like this aren’t really adoptable so many of our volunteers make it a priority to work with these dogs to slowly prove to them that we are worthy of their trust.
In Memorium
When I began volunteering at The Ranch in 2013, there were a couple of dogs in one of the back runs named Bella and Lucky. Both were approximately 8-years old with plenty of scars to prove they had spent years on the street. They must have had some street smarts to survive that long.
April Success
April Was a Great Month
In the month of April, we sent 64 dogs north of the border for a forever home and we had 1 local adoptions.
March Success
February Was a Great Month
In the month of February, we sent 51 dogs north of the border for a forever home and we had 7 local adoptions.
Dog of the Month
Meet our beautiful Vincente! He was a street dog that most likely had a home but was abandoned. It’s obvious that he’s friendly and happy to get his walks and be the center of your attention.
With Much Gratitude
My good friend Alison has 4 rescue dogs and has volunteered as a Flight Angel for helping dogs find there forever homes. Since our sweet Golden passed a little over a year and a half ago, Alison has been sending me pictures of hopeful dogs in need of homes. The timing was just not right, perhaps we just weren’t ready to open our hearts up to adopting a fur baby yet.
Volunteer of the Month
Amy Traxler is a different type of volunteer for sure. She lives on Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. She heard about The Ranch through a friend that volunteers at the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor. Amy decided to fly down and check us out. She stayed for two weeks, and volunteered every day. She became a fixture at The Ranch.
