Sailor Gets Furever Home

Clayton and I first learned about Sailor from an ad on the Adopt-a-Pet website. We both grew up with dogs and were becoming increasingly aware that we wanted to rescue one together. There was one blurry photo of Sailor and a short description that didn’t tell us much about him aside from the fact that he was a stray in Mexico and had been completely starved when he was found.

Even though there were dozens of other dogs with more information and better pictures, we were totally stuck on him so we finally messaged Ginger’s Pet Rescue, the agency that transported him to his new home in Seattle. He flew to the U.S. and he was so scared he wouldn’t come out of his crate so we had to delay our meeting with him.

The day we met Sailor, he was nervous at first and he hid behind the woman from the rescue shelter for a while before he would let us touch him. He warmed up slowly and eventually let us walk him. Clayton decided to at least look at his vet records but we were not planning to bring him home that day.

While Clayton looked at the records, Sailor started to open up and show his more cuddly side. As he let his guard down, we fell completely in love and ended up walking away with him that day. He hopped in our car and did not even look back. We brought him to Petco on the way home and stocked up on everything we could to make him know he was in his furever home.

In the last few months, Sailor has made incredible progress. He learns new tricks shockingly quickly and will do just about anything for a treat. He has mastered sitting, lying down, and even staying for a few seconds while we leave the room. He still eats too quickly and needs a few minutes around new people before he lets them pet him but he has become so much more confident.

We are excited to watch him continue to show us his personality. His favorite activities include hiking, fetch and attending virtual grad school cuddled in a lap. Sailor has made us so happy every day. Since we adopted him, he finally knows that he has a furever home.
