A Trip Worth Taking
By Brent Eastman
Victoria and I have only been in Portland six months. We moved here from Boston right before quarantine. There have been many adjustments and unknowns, but one thing we were sure about was that we wanted to rescue a dog.
We followed a few rescue agencies on Instagram including Street Dog Hero (SDH). We love dogs, all dogs, which made it difficult to decide who to pick and where to apply.
When SDH posted the Instagram video of Dolores and her puppies we just knew she was “the one”. We had already been approved to adopt so we messaged immediately that we were interested in Dolores. Thankfully, we were first in line. SDH answered all of our questions and concerns, we had lots of them. The volunteers made it as easy and positive an experience as possible.
When Dolores arrived in Portland, we met her and her puppies at the airport, exchanged info with some other adopters, and went home to unwind. At first she was timid but each day we watched her personality emerge and confidence shine through.
Dolores has been such a great addition to our family. We have gone camping, hiking, lake swimming and on all sorts of adventures already. She has a bunch of new toys, and plenty of comfortable spaces to relax and stretch out in our apartment. We are developing a routine that includes walks to the dog park, regular meals, and lots of snuggling and affection. She is excited about new sights, sounds, smells, and making dog friends at the park.
We don’t know what her life was like before she was rescued. She looks like she’s enjoying our company as much as we love having her. We feel so lucky to have her in our lives. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to adopt Dolores!
