Enough Love to Go Around
Tortillo, a senior pug, was found in a shop in San Nicolas by Jim and Kathy McLeod. He was malnourished, incontinent, and in terrible shape from being neglected. Jim and Kathy had a good understanding of pugs’ needs from having had other pugs in the past. They took Tortillo home to foster him and try to find an adopter. But he had so many health and other issues that they turned to The Ranch for help. Our wonderful staff and veterinarians stepped in.
We discovered that this lovable pug has deteriorated eyesight and is completely deaf. He also has gastrointestinal issues that are managed by special food. How, you might ask, would we be able to find an adopter for this little, deserving, elderly guy who was hoping to put the worst of his life behind him? Well, Jim and Kathy took on the challenge!
Through their wonderful caretaking efforts and attention, they found that even with all of his problems, Tortillo still enjoyed life tremendously! He would bark when his food was being prepared because he was so excited to eat, but otherwise he was a quiet boy. Jim, Kathy, and our lead medical foster, Cheryl, got him crate trained and neutered, which really helped his frequent urination and allowed him to sleep through the night.
Tortillo loves people, and enjoys rolling around on the couch and playing with his humans, but mostly he likes to sleep. Jim and Kathy diligently devoted time and effort to making Tortillo comfortable and happy; Kathy even hand-made him a custom harness. He thrived under their care, blossoming into a sweet, lovable dog.
They set out to find him the best forever home. Relentlessly they called on their resources, put out the word on social media, and never gave up. After several months of searching, they finally located a woman in Guadalajara who has other rescue dogs, including a pug. She even used to have an elderly deaf pug! She didn’t mind any of Tortillo’s health issues.
She and her family members are great parents. They even plan their travels around the dogs needs. This match of canine and human couldn’t have been more perfect. Thanks to the efforts of Jim and Kathy, Tortillo has landed in heaven. He has his choice of beds to sleep in, other small sweet doggies for company, and he is being treated like a king. We are forever grateful to Jim and Kathy for their perseverance, because this little guy sure found his happy ending!
