Lucky Quesadilla
by Carolyn Cothran
Sometimes an adoption sticks with you for days after. Quesadilla’s is certainly one of those.
One Wednesday, we were doing our thing caring for dogs, walking and socializing. This very nice Mexican family consisting of a mother and her two teenage sons came to The Ranch. In their very good English, they stated that they were looking for a puppy who would not grow to be too big as they had a very small yard.
We have a BUNCH of puppies and I took them to one litter where I was sure the pups would not grow to be huge. We had their mama and she was on the small side of medium. They wanted a female and the only one in the litter was our Quesadilla. The youngest son picked her up and it was all over. We looked at a few others to be certain but he would not let our girl go.
As we were walking to do the paperwork, his mother stated that Quesadilla's care would be in his hands. She said it was important for him to learn the responsibility of having a pet. The young man was about 13 and very engaged in the entire process of adoption. He asked me very good questions. We discussed all of the issues and he said he felt sure that he was equipped to care for our girl. He then told me in the most perfect English that he had been reading many books and articles about how to take care of a dog. Lucky girl!
