Plan Ahead for Your Pet
by Carolyn Cothran
Over the last six months, I have had two very close friends pass away leaving their beloved dogs. Neither one really had done a great job of planning for ensuring these dogs transition well.
Here is what I have learned:
Talk to a trusted friend or family member who would be willing to assume the responsibility of helping your pets make their next move. Make sure they know the details regarding your pet’s health. Write down medications they are taking, any health issues, have vaccine records, type of food and any other important details. Have their veterinarian’s information available.
Whomever will be helping your pet(s) will need immediate funds to either purchase medications, board the dogs, or whatever they may need. Stash some cash and show them where it is, or give them access to your banking info. It could cost as much as $2500 USD to get these pets stable.
As much as we love helping in this situation, many times the shelters are full or overfull and may not be able to take them immediately. Also, a shelter is a tough environment for older animals. All shelters work 100% from donations, so any help is super appreciated.
It is a very difficult time for friends, pets and everyone involved. Helping them all is a very important part of pet ownership.
