Food for the Soul
by Carolyn Cothran
Last year, we sent more than 400 dogs to forever homes North of the Border. This is always exciting and a little bittersweet.
I won’t lie, some days working in a Mexican shelter like ours is hard. There are so many more dogs than places for them to go. We always have a wait list of dozens of dogs needing to come here. It can be hard on those of us who deal with it daily.
I often fly dogs to either Portland or Seattle, but usually I do a quick turnaround. I meet the rescuers at the airport and then check in to fly home. Last weekend, I flew to Portland and stayed a few days. I got to watch an adoption of one of our dogs, and saw the others go to amazing foster homes. Even though the dogs were jet lagged and tired, you could tell they knew something great was on the horizon.
I also got to see a few former Ranch dogs happily living in their adoptive homes getting love and being cherished as they all so richly deserve.
Those of you who know me, know that I am a crier. I joyously cried the entire trip. I came home renewed and ready for the next set of adventures.
Our rescuers usually keep us posted on these dogs and where they go. This is the food for the soul!
